Hepatitis A and B shortages – as at September 2017
Due to a worldwide shortage of Hepatitis A and B vaccines manufacturers and suppliers, we are currently unable to replenish clinic stocks. This situation is beyond our control and we apologise for any inconvenience to travellers that this may cause.
So what does this mean?
This means that we do not have any of these vaccines available at present to immunise individuals travelling to countries where they could be exposed to Hepatitis A and B.
We have been advised by Public Health England that some vaccines may be available in the next few weeks, but their supply will be controlled, and limited.
So how does this affect our patients?
Many people may be planning foreign holidays to destinations outside of Europe over the next few weeks. Many countries outside Europe have higher incidences of diseases such as Hepatitis A and B which travellers may be exposed to in varying degrees. It is therefore important that your risk of contracting these is assessed and minimised before and during your visit.
So what can I do?
Discuss your travel plans with the practice nurses who will be able to advise you what vaccines may be required for your travel and whether or not they are available in the surgery. They may signpost you to some local private Travel Clinics such as MASTA and CityDoc Dorchester (there may be others) who may still hold supplies of these vaccines, so it is worth checking with them if we still have none available.

We also recommend that you check www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk or www.nathnac.org to determine possible health risks in your destination and how you can maintain your health while you travel. The practice nurses are available to discuss your needs further as required.
Please note this issue currently only applies to Hepatitis A and B, other vaccines we may recommend are not subject to these difficulties at present.
